TA holds off Portland/Deering nil until PD third period win, 2-1
BIDDEFORD — The Thornton Academy boys played Portland Deering Monday night at Biddeford Ice Arena, running a nil game until the third period, when a volley of goals took Portland Deering to the top, 2-1.
Thornton Academy scored the first goal in a game that was described as, “probably great for the fans, but nerve wracking for the coaches,” by Portland Deering head coach, Jeff Beaney.
Chase Wescott scored for Thornton early in the third, setting the fans into an uproar.
Portland Deering’s rebuttal, Donnie Tocci’s goal little more than a minute later, was assisted by Dylan Wike. Portland Deering’s winning goal, 90 seconds later, scored by Miki Silva, decided the game.
If Healpoint standings are any indication, Thornton’s defense is certainly improving. They managed to hold off Portland Deering, the fourth-ranked team in Class A South, while TA entered this game as the eighth-ranked team. TA has seven games left in the season, with a little under a month remaining, giving them a fair chance of improving in standings.
Thornton Academy is scheduled to play Greely High School on Thursday at 7:10 p.m. at Falmouth Family Ice.
