Alcohol has been ruled a contributor in the death of a freshman Binghamton University student on Saturday after he fell from a balcony at a Binghamton fraternity house.

Conor Donnelly, 18, of Pearl River, had been attending a house party hosted by Alpha Sigma Phi at 92 Front St., and was the in process of pledging at the fraternity, when he fell from a fourth-floor balcony, according to Binghamton police. Emergency responders were called to the scene at 2:11 p.m., with police officers and medics among them.

The fall happened as Donnelly tried to climb down to the third floor from the the fourth-floor balcony, and his death has been ruled accidental, Binghamton police Capt. Jack Collins said Monday.

Numerous students were attending the party, which was being held in the midst of an unofficial St. Patrick’s Day celebration by BU students since the campus was on a break during Binghamton’s traditional parade celebration March 4.

Dubbed “New Parade Day,” students milled around downtown dressed in green through the afternoon, though police reported no other disturbances or incidents Saturday.

“This is the result of trying to create a celebration out of drinking alcohol,” Collins said Monday of the student’s death. “Parade Day is about celebrating St. Patrick’s Day.”
