Knox County school board members voted unanimously Monday to ask Assistant Superintendent Bob Thomas to take over leadership of the district following a months-long search that came down to Thomas and Hamblen County leader Dale Lynch.
The board, in a special-called meeting Monday afternoon, voted 9-0 to offer the position to Thomas, who had previously been a finalist for the job in 2008.
“I appreciate the board very much and I feel so honored to have the opportunity to serve our students and our community and the board, our educators, our employees,” Thomas said after the meeting, adding that he was “overwhelmed” by the unanimous vote.
Board chair Patty Bounds will work with the county law department to negotiate Thomas’s contract, which could go before the board for a vote in early April. The board previously OK’d a salary range of $200,000 to $240,000. Vice Chair Amber Rountree, who also headed the search committee, said again Monday she’d like to see a two-year contract.
Thomas said he thought the negotiations would go quickly.
“I feel like I’ll be pretty easy to work with,” Thomas said. “I’m just eager to get started. I’ll work with the board in whatever fashion they want me to work with them to make the transition smooth and as quickly as they want to make it.”
