Joe Hoffman ‘Spring Fling’ Presenter – South Dakota News

Joe Hoffman horticulture vocational training instructor at Yankton Federal Prison Camp will present “Growing the Captive Mind” on Tuesday, March 28 from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Avera Professional Pavilion auditorium.

“We’ll discuss how the horticulture program with inmate students has progressed over years,” Hoffman said. Their curriculum includes trees, shrubs, roses, other perennials, annuals and specialty greenhouse crops. They learn how to grow, care for and propagate plants.

One of his annual horticulture program projects is the design flowerbeds on Observatory Hillside along Douglas Avenue of the prison. Last season’s design was Olympic Rings in vincas and marigolds.

“We’ll see what it takes to achieve a design,” he said. “For one, it takes some planning ahead. Now we’re completing flowerbed plans for 2018 and organizing the poinsettia crop for this fall.”
