Local kennel under quarantine after virus kills 10 puppies – News – The Enterprise, Brockton, MA – Massachusetts News

Tarawood Kennels in Halifax is under quarantine after the contagious parvovirus infected more than a dozen German sheperd dogs at the facility, killing two adult dogs and eight puppies.

HALIFAX – For months, Jennifer Collins and her husband visited Tarawood Kennels every three days to get to know the little German sheperd puppy they couldn’t wait to bring home.

On March 10, they were all set to finally bring Kaiser home. Instead, Collins woke to a message saying the facility was under quarantine and their new puppy wasn’t coming home.

“Imagine, you’re all excited. You wake up thinking your going to bring your puppy home today and then to this find out,” Collins said. “I’d been wearing the same sweatshirt– my husband’s so it would have both our scents and it– so our puppy would know he was ours. We were heartbroken.”

Collins would later learn Kaiser was one of eight puppies and two adult dogs at the breeding facility to die from the outbreak of a highly contagious, often fatal disease that’s shutdown the local kennel.

“It’s a terrible disease to die from,” said Halifax animal control officer Noreen Callahan. “It’s a virus you see, a lot of times, in puppies under 6 months old who haven’t been vaccinated yet and is extremely contagious.”
