Patriots Nip Islanders in Extra Frames, 1-0

Baseball can be a cruel game. Scoreless pitching duels that go extra innings may be the cruelest of all. Just ask Islanders senior starting pitcher AJ Jorge, who pitched eight shutout innings, allowed just one hit, struck out 10, walked only one and left the mound in a scoreless game. Or ask Patriots senior southpaw starter Jack Page. He also fired eight scoreless innings, allowed only two hits, fanned three and walked three, with the same result as Jorge.

Two scintillating pitching performances in a game played to a draw through eight frames on Tuesday, April 18 at MHS’s Gaudet Field.

Classic baseball cruelty.

It wasn’t until the ninth inning that someone finally scored. Middletown’s Nathan Houle took the mound in that frame, surrendering a leadoff walk to Portsmouth’s Andrew Preuit. After Kyle Bicho flew out to center field, Connor Richardson hit a high chopper back to the mound, with Houle’s only play being to first base, advancing Preuit into scoring position.
