(April 20, 2017) A Nantucket man with an admitted history of mental illness has been committed to a state institution after crashing his truck in Quidnet early Tuesday morning following a three-week string of bizarre behavior that included drinking paint at a downtown restaurant and the continuing alleged harassment of an island couple who had rented him a room, according to court documents and interviews.
Andrew Schaeffer, 38, of 19 Old South Road, was due in court Tuesday morning, but did not appear because he was transported to Nantucket Cottage Hospital and from there taken off-island to be committed to a state-run mental-health institution after crashing his truck Tuesday.
According to Nantucket fire chief Paul Rhude, a call came in at 4:18 Tuesday morning for a car fire at 30 Quidnet Road. The United States Coast Guard also called police because a marine emergency positioning indicating radio beacon (EPIRB) was sending a distress signal from the same location.
