A 29-year-old man was arrested Monday after he was accused of leading officers on a chase from Newport News into Hampton, police said.
Officers in the area of 30th Street and Oak Avenue saw a silver BMW parked on the street just before 11:45 p.m., according to police spokesman Harold Eley.
The officers smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop in the area of Oak Avenue and 27th Street, Eley said.
As the officers walked toward the vehicle, the driver pulled away at a high rate of speed, Eley said.
The officers pursued the vehicle into Hampton until it stopped in the area of England Avenue and Chapel Street. The driver got out and ran, but police caught him, Eley said.
Police searched the vehicle and found suspected marijuana inside. The driver, identified as Donnell Harris, 29, of the 7400 block of River Road in Newport News, refused to consent to testing, Eley said.
He was charged with possession of marijuana; DWI; obstruction of justice; refusal of blood or breath test; disregard or elude law enforcement; and reckless driving.
