While some students might take a trip to the beach or Disney World for spring break, a group of Lutie students changed things up with an out-of-this-world experience during their time away from school last month. Thirteen sixth- through eighth-grade students, joined by middle school science teacher Stephanie Smeja, spent March 27-29 at space camp based at the US Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama, taking education beyond the textbook – and beyond Earth’s atmosphere.
Making an impression
The group from Lutie participated in a program centered on learning the history of space exploration and engaging in future plans, including a trip to Mars. The programs at space camp are led by crew trainers with degrees in the astrophsics field.
