Discovery student injures staffer; second incident in two weeks – North Dakota News

At the beginning of the school day while outside, an unidentified student caused an injury to a staff member’s arm, Fargo School District spokeswoman AnnMarie Campbell said.

The staffer left school to receive medical attention, and the student did not return to class for the day, Campbell said in an email Thursday afternoon.

Campbell said the school resource officer, a police officer stationed at the school, assisted with the situation, as well as another Fargo police officer.

Asked about disciplinary measures being taken against the student, Campbell said she would not release any information regarding the student — including the gender or age.

“These have been isolated incidents and are not pervasive throughout Discovery Middle School,” Campbell said.

A paraprofessional at Discovery received a minor arm injury the morning of Thursday, May 4, after a student with a behavior issue grabbed the staff member, prompting a call to police.

Campbell said at that time that the school would be working with the student and family “as policies and procedures dictate.”

How the district responds to student violence has emerged as an issue in its pending contract negotiations with its teachers.

According to district data, there were 187 reports of students becoming physical with district staff in the 2015-16 school year, up from 173 in 2015-15 and 137 in 2013-14.
