Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales says two people died in a magnitude 6.9 earthquake in western Guatemala near the border with Mexico on Wednesday.
The dead included a woman in the city of Quetzaltenango and a homeless man in the town of San Sebastian Retalhueleu, both close to the quake’s epicenter.
The pre-dawn quake caused moderate damage to homes, triggered some landslides across highways and injured at least five people.
“We greatly mourn the loss of lives,” Morales said.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported the tremor was centered 8 kilometers (5 miles) southwest of Tajumulco, Guatemala about 111 kilometers (69 miles) below the surface.
