Monterey >> Authorities called off a search for a man spotted on a boogie board Monday night in the bay off of Monterey State Beach after they were unable to find any sign of a missing person Tuesday.
The Coast Guard and other agencies responded at about 9 p.m. when a family saw the man in the water, looked away for a few minutes and didn’t see him when they looked back. The family stayed until authorities arrived, but they could not find any evidence of the man.
“In this case, we received no report of a missing person, there was no missing board and there was also no unaccounted for car in the parking lot,” said Lt. Megan Mervar of the Coast Guard. “It’s possible that the boogie boarder got out of the water while the family wasn’t looking.”
Mervar said the Coast Guard did a thorough search, using a cutter and a helicopter.
“The search is suspended, which basically means we’re not allocating assets to it right now so we can allocate those assets for other cases,” she said. “If we do get some sort of indication at any time that there is a missing person or that there’s a person in the water that’s been spotted, we will send assets out to search (for them).”
