A suspect is in custody after leading Paradise Police on a high speed car chase through town that ended after the driver crashed his vehicle and was apprehended by officers attempting to flee on foot.
Officer Zachary Price said that he saw the suspect, Ruben Gutierrez of Magalia, in a 1986 Mercedes sedan that was facing the wrong side of traffic on Maxwell Drive while going through a mailbox.
“In recent months we have had a ton of problems with mail theft,” said Price.
He then recognized the 19 year old, as a felon with warrants out from the Butte County Sheriff’s office for stolen vehicles.
After seeing Price, Gutierrez allegedly then took off on Maxwell and turned onto Greenwood Drive, a residential street that connects two roads but is currently closed to through traffic due to road reconstruction.
Price said that his partner was on Greenwood in another patrol vehicle when Gutierrez came down the road towards him.
“My partner was coming head on with him and Officer Chamness had to drive his vehicle out of the way to avoid collision,” he said.
Gutierrez then allegedly blew through the construction signs and turned onto Maxwell Drive and then Skyway.
According to Price, he pursued the suspect down Skyway where he was weaving in and out of traffic at around 65 miles per hour before turning onto Oliver Road.
Price said that he lost sight of Gutierrez as he went around the corner of Oliver but then as he continued, he saw Gutierrez’s vehicle crashed off the side of the road.
