A semi-truck crashed and a sedan got wedged underneath it on the center divider of south Interstate 5 near the Orange County line early Thursday, causing a major traffic backup in both directions.
The collision occurred about 4:20 a.m. under the Cristianitos Road overpass in San Clemente, according to the California Highway Patrol.
One person was taken to an Orange County hospital, where a blood-alcohol test was to be taken, the CHP said.
The CHP reported that long sections of metal siding were shredded off the big-rig’s 40-foot, empty trailer. Scattered debris from the wreckage prompted officers to close northbound as well as southbound lanes.
The big-rig ended up caught partly on top of the center divider, with a Honda Accord under it. Chunks of concrete also were knocked out of the divider and the overpass pillars may have been damaged.
Much of the debris was cleaned up and two right lanes in both directions were re-opened by about 6 a.m. The northbound lanes were fully opened about 40 minutes later. The two left lanes southbound remained closed.
