Carroll County officials, some with heavy hearts, met June 13 to name an interim auditor.
Tara Wood, a clerk in the auditor’s office, was named to take the place of Auditor Tom Gray until a Republican Party caucus can meet to appoint someone to take his place.
Gray, 52, died June 7 after being ill for about two months. He had been the auditor for a little over a year.
Wood was at the special meeting of the Board of Commissioners June 13, where Commissioners Chairman Bill Brown read the resolution making the temporary change official. Brown asked that the meeting begin with a moment of silence for Gray.
According to state statute, the first deputy auditor takes the place of the auditor if necessary, but Felecia Clawson is on maternity leave. Gray’s second deputy, Shelly Alderman, isn’t obligated by state statute to take the position, and she declined, according to the resolution.
