Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley said she is not concerned for her safety following the shooting of a congressman in Virginia Wednesday and added that city hall needs to remain a building where the public can communicate with its elected officials.
“It’s really important for our community to have access to its elected officials,” Whaley said following Wednesday’s city commission meeting.
Whaley said she does not currently see a need for increasing security following Wednesday’s shooting.
“I think we have to do our job, and being with people is the job that we signed on to do,” Whaley said.
The city has officers present at every city commission meeting and Whaley typically has an officer with her when she does porch tours throughout the city each year to provide security.
