On March 16, Ashley Gregg Bandavanis — daughter of Don and Debi Gregg, of South Hill in Ithaca — and her husband, Dean, were given the worst news that any parent could ever receive.

Their son, 6-year-old Dean (“Deanie”) was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor called diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG). This is a highly aggressive and hard-to-treat brain tumor, in the part of the brain that controls heartbeat, breathing, swallowing, eye movement, eyesight and balance. Prognosis is daunting — a life span of six to 12 months.

Ashley, Dean and Deanie are currently in Monterrey, Mexico, undergoing treatments that are only offered in Mexico at this time. Medical insurance does not cover any of the costs of the treatment, and the financial burden on this family has and will continue to be staggering.

So from 1 to 7 p.m. June 25 at The Dock, 415 Taughannock Blvd. in Ithaca, there will be a fundraiser for the Bandavanis family, which will include live bands, food from the Italian Carry Out (1070 Danby Road), desserts from Dolce Delight (1080 Danby Road), raffles and an auction. Admission is $15 at the door. If you are unable to attend this event, you might consider making a donation directly to the family at youcaring.com/ashleybandavanis-787530, and thank you. The Salino and Dixon families are the organizers of this event.
