Historic Lakeside Ballroom on auction block – News – Pennsylvania News

A historic dance hall that hosted big-name acts and large crowds is going on the auction block.

Wagner Auction Service, Shoemakersville, Berks County, will begin auctioning Lakeside Ballroom at 6 p.m. June 29 from the 40 Crystal Lane property in Barnesville, Ryan Twp.

“I think what’s unique about it is its size,” co-owner Barbara Malafarina said about the 22,000-square-foot ballroom. “We have had 1,500 people in here, and we still had a lot of space remaining.”

The auction includes the ballroom and eight acres of surrounding land, as well as tables, chairs and some equipment.

Malafarina has owned the property since 2008 and said it was simply time to sell.

In recent years, the large venue has hosted musical acts, class reunions,

weddings and fundraisers. Its last event was in March, when it opened its doors for the Carbon-Tamaqua Unit of the American Cancer Society’s annual Chinese auction.

The property has a solid wood floor, stage, bars, kitchen and an attached banquet hall. The banquet hall had recently operated as a bar and restaurant.

According to information from the auctioneer, the building has a newer roof, windows, entrance and heat, as well as an on-lot water system and public sewer.

Malafarina noted that the property does not include the former Lakeside dam, which was drained sometime in the 1980s.

As for the ballroom, it had a unique start.

“I heard that they brought it in as a pavilion in 1928,” Malafarina said. “And then in 1931 or 1932, they brought in the floor, laid it and put the walls up.”
