A one-vehicle crash Tuesday evening in the 4300 block of Alabama Highway 169 has left a 54-year-old man dead and another charged, Lee County authorities said.
The Alton Lamar Watson of Opelika, Ala., was pronounced dead at 3:35 a.m. CDT Wednesday in the emergency room at Midtown Medical Center in Columbus, Lee County Coroner Bill Harris said. He died of blunt force injuries after the 8:11 p.m. crash.
Authorities said Watson was a passenger in the northbound 2002 Nissan Altima driven by Christopher Radford when it left the road and overturned four miles south of Opelika. Watson, who wasn’t using a seat belt, was partially ejected from the vehicle.
Radford, 52, of Auburn was charged with reckless murder and held in the Lee County Jail on $150,000 bond. A preliminary investigation into the crash indicates that alcohol may have been a factor.
Watson was airlifted by a Lifesaver 3 helicopter to the hospital in Columbus where he died early Wednesday.
