From staff reports
The Rowan County Legion softball team debuted on Thursday with a doubleheader split against Randolph County.
Rowan won 10-2 and lost 6-1 at Southwestern Randolph County High in rural Asheboro.
Maddie Trexler had two triples, Mackenzie Sprinkle had three hits, and Maddie Hunter pitched three shutout innings for Rowan.
Trexler led off the opener with the first hit in program history.
“Our first four or five hitters got hits to start the first game,” Rowan manager Todd McNeely said. “We got started with a bang.”
The second game didn’t go as well for a young Rowan team.
“We had one bad inning defensively and they used a slower pitcher in the second game, and we didn’t adjust very well to her,” McNeely said.
Rowan used all four of its pitchers in the twin bill.
All in all, the first games were a success. Rowan plans to play its first home games on Monday at Carson Hiigh against Stanly County, with a makeup doubleheader scheduled for 6 p.m.
“This was all new tonight,” McNeely said. “We got to look at everybody and we learned a lot.”
McCanless Golf Club hosted Piney Point Golf Club in a PGA Junior League Golf Match.
