ROCKFORD — A person was shot in the back Wednesday night on the city’s southeast side, police said.
Officers responded about 9:35 p.m. to a local hospital after a shooting victim arrived via a private vehicle driven by his brother, Diego Heras. The victim, whose age was not released, initially told police he was walking in the 1200 block of 14th Street when he was followed by two black males and shot.
He later told police he was confronted by one man at his residence and shot.
Police later located the vehicle that Diego Heras had been driving. A shotgun and ammunition were recovered from the vehicle. Police do not know if the shotgun and ammunition played a role in the incident.
Diego Heras was arrested on two counts of aggravated unlawful use of weapons, no firearm owner’s identification card and traffic charges. He is being held in the Winnebago County Jail on a $50,000 bond.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Rockford Police Department at 779-500-6551 or Crime Stoppers 815-963-7867.
