‘Sturgis Fest’ preview: A mix of new and familiar at festival – News – Sturgis Journal – Sturgis, MI –  Michigan News

“Sturgis Fest” offers new opportunities this year.
Of historical significance, is the grand opening on Tuesday of Sturgis Historical Museum At The Depot. The decision to move the depot from West Main Street to downtown began four years ago.
Other changes at the festival have been partly inspired by former Sturgis resident Bob Pranga, aka “Dr. Christmas.”
For about a year, Pranga has worked with Cathi  Abbs, executive director of Sturgis Area Chamber of Commerce, to encourage enhancement of the festival.
“Family Night,” set for June 21, features children’s activities and a vintage baseball game at Franks Field, as has become tradition. New attractions that day will occur at Free Church Park, including a poetry jam at 6 p.m., followed by “Concert Under the Stars 8-11 p.m. Moon Howler Band headlines that event.
Pranga is excited about an outdoor teen dance, set for 8 p.m. Wednesday at the depot.
“(Teens) are going to be downtown at the top of the hill and everyone is going to hear them,” Pranga said.
Working with Sturgis High School students for Sturgis Fest has been a highlight for Pranga, notably in Roxanne Persing’s marketing class, where he has encouraged students to present promotional plans for the event.
“It’s been fun to be around the next generation of townspeople,” Pranga said. “The kids have a very distinct idea of what they want their town to be.”
