THATCHER — Graham County Sheriff PJ Allred said the cautious approach taken by the various firefighting teams battling the Frye fire on Mount Graham is the correct approach to take.
“We don’t need firefighter deaths on Mount Graham to be a stat we’re known for,” Allred said.
Allred was one of the speakers at the fourth community meeting on the Frye fire Wednesday evening at Thatcher Middle School.
“I understand everybody’s frustration,” Allred said. “We’ve got Drew John and Becky Nutt (at the state Legislature), and John McCain and Jeff Flake (in the U.S. Senate); that’s where this fight take place, not with these guys. These guys are specialists in fighting wildland fires.”
Greg Poncin, the incident commander for the Frye fire for the Northern Rockies Type 1 Incident Management Team, said his team’s reception by the community has been “outstanding.
