Fort Smith Schools wins safety award

Fort Smith Public Schools transportation department recently won the Arkansas Association for Pupil Transportation award again this year, according to a news release from the school district.

AAPT has presented this award for five years, and this is the third year Fort Smith Schools has been named the winner, according to the release. The transportation department first won the award in 2013 and received the award again in 2016. The criteria is based on the maintenance and operational condition of buses, accident/safety record, driver training and record keeping.

Recommendations for the award are made by the inspectors, trainers and staff from the Arkansas Department of Education’s school transportation division.

ArFuture grants available

Arkansas Tech University-Ozark campus encourages students to apply for their share of $8.5 million in grants available through a new program offered by the Arkansas Department of Higher Education. Arkansas Future (ArFuture) grants will cover tuition and fees for eligible students in qualifying associate degree and certificate programs at public higher education institutions.

Scholarships will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Application deadline for Fall 2017 ArFuture grants is July 1.
