AKRON, Ohio (AP) — Perci Garner got A.J. Simcox to ground out with the bases loaded to end the game, leading the Akron RubberDucks to a 7-6 win over the Erie SeaWolves on Thursday.
Akron starter Matt Esparza (5-0) picked up the win after he struck out eight and walked two while allowing three hits over six scoreless innings. Beau Burrows (2-2) went 4 1/3 innings, allowing six runs and six hits in the Eastern League game. He also struck out four and walked four.
Akron took the lead in the first when Eric Haase hit an RBI double and then scored on a three-run home run by Tyler Krieger.
After Akron added three runs, the SeaWolves cut into the deficit with five runs in the eighth inning, including two RBI each from Christin Stewart and Kody Eaves.
The SeaWolves saw their comeback attempt come up short after Steven Moya hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Logan Watkins in the ninth inning to cut the Akron lead to 7-6.
Krieger homered and singled, driving home five runs in the win. Haase doubled and singled, scoring three runs.
Eaves doubled twice and singled, driving home two runs for the SeaWolves.
