New grocery store planned for downtown Tuscaloosa – News – Tuscaloosa News – Alabama News

A Birmingham-based developer has plans for a new grocery store complex on a tract of city-owned land across from the Tuscaloosa Amphitheater.

Blackwater Resources LLC was the only company out of more than 100 to submit a bid for the site that once housed the Tuscaloosa Farmers Market, city officials said.

Should the company win the contract, Amy McMullen, general counsel, chief operating officer and executive vice president-operations for Blackwater Resources, said the company is planning a new grocery store for the border of west Tuscaloosa.

When asked, McMullen declined to name the specific grocer, but she did say that the company has received interest from grocery operators for the location.

“Preliminary feedback is very high on this site,” she said.

The Tuscaloosa City Council’s properties committee first saw the presentation from Blackwater Resources on Tuesday. It is waiting until a specially-called meeting on July 11 before deciding whether to award the development company an exclusive dealings contract.

Blackwater Resources has asked for a 180-day due diligence period to finalize the transaction and determine the economic feasibility of developing the site.

It has offered the appraised value of $2.9 million for the 3.8-acre tract, but there was no word on the company’s expected overall investment into the project.

However, that didn’t stop council members from heaping praise on the plan.

“The first thing I’ll say is I’m glad it’s not apartments,” said District 6 Councilman Eddie Pugh. “This is not a grocery store in West End, but it’s a start.”
