Local fitness instructor Wuanita Powers, a 51-year-old resident of Madera Highland, was born and raised in Las Vegas, and has called Sahuarita home for two decades.
Q: What drew you to become a fitness instructor, and what have been some of your most memorable experiences in this career?
A: My parents were very much into outdoor recreation. They loved to fish, hunt and camp. We spent most of our time on Lake Mead. Subsequently, we were swimmers, water skiers, rock climbers and good canyon jumpers. All that athleticism carried me through to college and I learned how to weight train. I loved the powerfulness, strength and energy that developed. When I was married and my children were growing, I continued to lift and then began training friends in my home. Helping friends and neighbors felt so rewarding and, coupled with my mother-in-law’s encouragement to turn my passion into a career, it led to me become a fitness instructor. I’ve had many incredible experiences over the last 15 years. The most satisfying is when someone you think you haven’t impacted surprises you with their gratefulness. I love that!
Q: What are your interests and activities outside of work?
A: I love taking my children to the lake camping. I am a big movie buff and love sitting in front of the big screen munching popcorn. My children say I embarrass them because I scream when something jumps out or laugh hysterically or cry like a little girl (“Saving Private Ryan” and “The Passion of the Christ”) but they still go with me.
