As the Long Beach crowd chanted, “USA” on championship point of the Long Beach Presidents Cup at the World Series of Beach Volleyball, Brazil’s duo of Larissa and Talita defeated USA’s duo of Lauren Fendrick and April Ross for the gold medal on Saturday afternoon.
“The crowd made a lot of noise,” Talita said. “They were loud, but you have to forget about that and focus on the court.”
Larissa and Talita are the No. 1 duo in the world and proved it with a 21-15, 21-17 sweep over the Americans. The Brazilians only dropped one set throughout the tournament.
After dropping the first set, Fendrick and Ross went on a 5-0 run to start the second with Ross at the service line. Ross, the Newport Harbor High School and USC product, is considered one of the best servers in the world and finished with three aces in the match. But Larissa and Talita responded by evening the set at 6-6 with great play at the net and impressive hustle plays on the defensive end. The two teams traded points until 14-14, when the Brazilians pulled away.
“We never gave up,” Talita said. “(Ross) is a great server, but we didn’t lose our heads.”
Talita finished with 10 kills in the match and added three blocks, while Larissa had 13 kills, six digs and an ace.
Ross is recovering from a broken toe suffered a few weeks ago, but was moving great on the court. She had six kills and six digs, while Fendrick led the way at the net with 10 kills and four blocks.
