A man apparently drowned Sunday after entering swiftly moving waters in a Morgan Hill creek.
“The report we had was that some kids were playing along the banks and the person went in to assist them getting out of the water — and the person hasn’t come out,” said Capt. Mike Van Elgort of the San Jose Fire Department, which responded to the incident.
The apparent victim has not been identified. Multiple witnesses told authorities that the person who entered the water was a man in his 30s, Van Elgort said.
The incident occurred around 2 p.m. in Coyote Creek behind the Parkway Lakes Morgan Hill RV Park on Ogier Avenue between Highway 101 and Old Monterey Road.
“In that area, we have a fairly sharp current, and our team that went in found it to be quite aggressive and dangerous,” Van Elgort commented, asking the public to exercise extra caution when swimming this summer. “I don’t remember those creeks flowing that strongly since maybe the ’80s.”
Numerous police, parks and fire agencies responded to the emergency and “fished the banks” for about an hour, he said. A dive team from the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Department remained at the creek at 6 p.m., continuing to search for the body.
