Two baseball teams from the Mountain Home area squared off Sunday for the second time in four days to sharpen their play heading into postseason tournaments this weekend.
The Lockeroom Senior American Legion squad will begin state tournament play Friday at Conway, while the Blue Devils 15-and-under Babe Ruth team will be traveling to Petal, Miss., for the Southwest Regional Tournament.
Four Lockeroom pitchers combined to strike out 20 Blue Devils over 12 shutout innings as the Legion team dispatched the Blue Devils, 3-0 and 4-0, in a doubleheader on Lester White Field at Cooper Park.
Lockeroom pitcher Jordan Anderson struck out eight batters over five innings, as he and Brady Smith combined to toss a shutout in the first game.
“Jordan threw a lot more strikes than what I expected, so that’s why he got to go as long as he did,” Lockeroom head coach Lester White said. “He was right there where we wanted him. Marshall (Roberson) threw really well, Ben (Henderson) threw well, and Brady (Smith) threw well.”
The Blue Devils had a hit in every inning except one against Anderson, including two in the fifth. But the Lockeroom right-hander squelched any rally the Blue Devils could put together.
Lockeroom scored its first run in the first inning with the switch-hitting Smith smacking a double from the left side and scoring on a hit by Roberson.
