Banning police Officer Christopher Sayeski had an eventful first day on the job when he and his training officer, Derek Thesier, saved a baby’s life.
Sayeski and Thesier were called to a home June 25 where an infant had fallen into the backyard swimming pool. When they arrived, the baby was not breathing and rapidly turning blue, according to a news release from the city.
Sayeski began CPR with the assistance of Thesier and a short time later, the child began breathing. The officers monitored the infant until paramedics arrived and took the child to Loma Linda University Hospital. The baby is doing fine, the city reports.
“Our officers are usually the first responders on-scene and are trained to perform emergency medical care when needed,” interim City Manager and Police Chief Alex Diaz said in the release. “Officers Sayeski and Thesier used their training and saved that infant’s life.”
The officers were presented with the Banning Police Department’s Lifesaver Award at the July 11 City Council meeting.
