CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Corey Bird hit a run-scoring triple in the first inning, leading the Greensboro Grasshoppers to a 7-3 win over the West Virginia Power on Sunday.
The triple by Bird, part of a two-run inning, gave the Grasshoppers a 1-0 lead before Bird scored on a ground out later in the inning.
The Grasshoppers later added one run in the second, three in the fifth, and one in the seventh to secure the victory.
West Virginia missed an additional scoring opportunity in the sixth, when Arden Pabst hit into a double play with the bases loaded to end the inning.
Greensboro right-hander Dustin Beggs (8-5) picked up a quality start and the win after allowing two runs on seven hits over six innings. Opposing starter James Marvel (4-7) took the loss in the South Atlantic League game after a rough outing in which he allowed six runs and four hits over five innings.
