A driver who crashed after a high-speed chase was pulled unconscious from his wrecked car moments before it burst into flames early Monday, Chula Vista police said.
The pursuit began after officers spotted a Chrysler PT Cruiser driven by a man they suspected was involved in a fight near L Street and Fourth Avenue about 2:15 a.m., police said.
When they tried to pull the vehicle over, the 19-year-old driver sped off. Police said he reached speeds topping 80 mph and ran a red light at Broadway before crashing through a guardrail near Bay Boulevard and L Street.
The vehicle flew 100 feet and crash landed in a concrete ditch. Officers cut their way through a fence to get to the smashed car, police said. They pulled the unconscious driver from the smoking vehicle. It was engulfed in flames moments later.
The driver was taken to a hospital with injures that included a broken leg. After he is treated, police said, he may face charges related to the pursuit including felony evading and driving under the influence of alcohol.
