Gadsden police officers responded early Sunday to a report of two possible vehicle break-ins in the 500 block of George Wallace Drive and, after a chase, were able to apprehend a suspect.
An officer was talking to a couple about their burglarized car, from which a box of small items, 26 Wii games, five controllers and two microphones and an iPhone5 with a case with black and white designs had been stolen. The man saw someone lurking in the shadows and alerted the officer.
The officer saw a tall, skinny man wearing dark clothing, carrying a backpack. As the male victim started to walk toward the suspect, he tried to get away. The officer tried to intercept the man before he got out of sight and told other officers which direction he was traveling.
As the officer topped a hill, she saw the man running across the road and down an alleyway between two buildings off George Wallace Drive. Two marked units had come to the area and stopped suddenly, chasing the suspect on foot. They apprehended him and the officer helped to secure him so he could be handcuffed. He was searched for weapons and one of the officers involved in the pursuit said the man had tossed something away.
A loaded firearm was recovered, as was a backpack containing the Wii games and controllers, the microphones and the iPhone. The box containing other items was found sitting beside a fence.
The suspect, a 46-year-old Gadsden man, was arrested.
The stolen property was returned to the owners and the gun was taken into evidence. Officers found it had been reported stolen in Calhoun County.
