A.K. Smiley library closes the book on summer reading program – California News

REDLANDS >> The A.K. Smiley Public Library’s summer reading program ended Tuesday with hundreds helping the site “Build a Better World.”

The seasonal activity, which began in June, encourages children and teens to pick up a book or four and keep their brains active in hopes of avoiding summer “brain drain.”

“We had a great time,” said Pamela Martinez, youth services librarian. “We saw an increase (in participation) from last year, and that’s always good.”

The library took a different approach in hosting this year’s program by encouraging participants to pick up a map and challenge themselves to a series of tasks built around the theme, “Build a Better World.”

Smiley Library hosts activities throughout the year. For more information, visit the library at 125 W. Vine St., or call 909-798-7565.
