Barstow Police Department set for National Night Out – News – – California News

Complete with numerous safety booths and educational displays, the Barstow Police Department is set to host a community event on National Night Out at 6 tonight at Dana Park.

This family-friendly event is geared to educate the surrounding communities on all that the Barstow area has to offer within its local emergency services and programs.

Besides the Barstow Police Department, there will be a number of emergency personnel on hand conducting various demonstrations, including Domestic Violence Outreach, Probation, Neighborhood Watch and more.

The Barstow Police Department will be distributing goody bags filled with stickers, pens, pencils, an activity book featuring “stranger danger” and more for the children attending.

The Barstow Fire Department, SAFE Coalition, California Highway Patrol and the Barstow Sheriff’s Department also will be present with safety booths.

Attendees will have an up close view of K-9 demonstrations as the dogs will be led through basic commands and suspect apprehension.

“I would say most people enjoy the K-9 demonstrations the most,” Barstow Police Department Cpl. Katherine Greig said.

Held the first Tuesday of every August, National Night Out events bring awareness to police programs and other anti-crime efforts.

“It helps build a partnership between the community and emergency services,” Greig said. “It is a team effort.”

Since the National Association of Town Watch established National Night Out in 1984, thousands of communities across the United States have held their own annual event each year.
