A movie showing at Cinestudio was made in Italy more than 50 years ago, but its theme is universal: drowning in debt while keeping up with the Joneses.
“Il Boom” is a black comedy about a man living during a time of economic prosperity, who lives large even though he can’t afford it, and socializes with people who may or may not be as wealthy as they present themselves to be.
The film, directed by pioneering neorealist Vittorio De Sica, is just now getting a release in the United States. It will be shown Friday to Wednesday, Aug. 4 to 9, at 7:30 p.m., with a 2:30 p.m. matinee on Sunday, Aug. 6, at Cinestudio, 300 Summit St., on the campus of Trinity College in Hartford. Admission is $10, $8 seniors and students, $7 for Friends of Cinestudio. cinestudio.org.
