MIDDLETOWN >> A former state legislator and political consultant has been hired as Mayor Dan Drew’s new chief of staff.
Geoff Luxenberg, who served two terms in the General Assembly representing Manchester and was Drew’s campaign manager on his 2011 re-election bid, began work in City Hall Tuesday.
Luxenberg said he divested himself of his political consulting company The Vinci Group before being hired. He sold off his portion to partner Michael Farina, he said.
The firm “was founded to help Democrats win elections,” according to a mission statement on the company’s website. It specializes in “fundraising, strategic management, field and direct mail,” according to information on the website.“I had a vacancy, and I had an excellent person who was available to fill it,” Drew said in a telephone interview Tuesday morning.
Drew did not issue a press release announcing the Luxenberg’s appointment and said he doubted he would.
“It’s a great honor to have the opportunity to work for Mayor Dan Drew and the people of Middletown. I’m rolling up my sleeves and ready to work extremely hard and do the best job I can,” Luxenberg said, calling Drew a “dynamic leader.”
The chief of staff’s position was most recently held by Joseph Samolis, who was hired as head of Planning, Conservation and Development in April.
Drew said he and Luxenberg are friends of long standing. A West Hartford native, Luxenberg grew up in Manchester. He is a graduate of North Carolina State University.
