“Crapper’s Full” is a Ridgecrest soapbox derby team that Red Bull selected to participate in the 2017 Red Bull Soapbox Race in Los Angeles. The race will take place at Elysian Park on Aug. 20.
Team leader John Blanton told the Daily Independent on Tuesday afternoon that Red Bull invites teams based on soapbox concept drawings they send in. Red Bull wants to see that the team has technical know-how, but they also want to see creativity. This is where their team name comes in. It is creative, to say the least.
Blanton said the team name comes from the iconic movie “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.” There’s a classic scene where the character Uncle Eddie is emptying his RV’s septic tank into the neighborhood sewer. When neighbors come out to see him, he looks up at them jovially, or drunkenly, and calls out, “Crapper was full!” Or at least, that’s almost what he says.
“They wouldn’t let us use the actual word Uncle Eddie says,” Blanton told the Daily Independent.
Despite the slight alteration of the movie line, team Crapper’s Full has no doubt the race’s audience will understand the reference. Their conceptual drawings show that their final soapbox racer will resemble a miniature version of the beat up, crappy RV from the movie. Blanton said team members will even dress up like the cast.
Blanton said that Red Bull hasn’t yet released the prize for first place, but he expects it to be substantial. He explained that placement is judged on three categories: creativity and execution of the concept, the performance of a 20 second skit before the race, and then how fast they can get down the hill.
To make sure they can…
