Theresa Amato, 92, died July 26.
Also known as Gram, Tessie or Aunt Tess to many, she was a force to be reckoned with. Theresa had a great heart, an indomitable spirit and a smile that could light up any room. We will miss her terribly.
Theresa was born June 5, 1925 in Brooklyn, New York. She married and had two children, Joseph and Nancy. After a divorce, she worked multiple jobs as a secretary and waitress to support them. Theresa later worked for an investment management firm in New York City until her retirement.
During those years in New York, there were many wonderful times with family and friends but she also faced difficult challenges with her own health as well as the terrible illness and passing of her daughter Nancy and later her loving son Joseph, who passed suddenly in 2004.
She moved to Lake Havasu City in 1996 after visiting her friend Jeri, which kind of shocked our family considering how far it was from New York. But Theresa truly loved Havasu.
No shrinking violet, Theresa quickly joined various social organizations including the Lions Club. She founded and became president of the New Yorkers of Havasu in 2001, later renamed New Yorkers of Havasu and Friends so others could join. She made many dear friends in Havasu and loved them all. We are comforted that some visited her in her last days and were with her holding her hand when she passed.
