United Way of Western Connecticut is seeking donations and sponsors for its back-to-school program that helps kids in Danbury and greater New Milford.
The program gives children from struggling families a new backpack filled with school supplies, toiletry items and a gift card for clothing purchases. Last year, this program supported nearly 800 students in the Danbury, New Milford and Stamford areas.
United Way is seeking either monetary donations or for local residents to sponsor the full needs of an identified student.
“There is nothing more magical that the look on a child’s face who has just received a new backpack stuffed with everything they’ll need to start the school year off with confidence,” said Isabel Almeida, United Way’s executive vice president of community development, in a press release.
“But for many local families, the cost to equip their children with everything they’ll need to succeed in school is daunting,” Almeida said. “Our Back-To-School programs make a real difference to struggling families in our local community. There are still dozens of children on our back-to-school lists in Danbury and New Milford in need of sponsors.”
