Tents would suffice for jail expansion

James Oravetz,

Mountain Home

Mr. Montgomery wants to build a new jail. I was watching a documentary on Riker’s Island in New York on television and they had overcrowding in their prison, until the criminals’ trials came up.

You know what New York did? They built tents to house them. I thought, Baxter County wants to build a new jail, this would be a good idea, and it would be something to look into. Take care of overcrowding and maybe save the taxpayers a lot of money.

Mr. Montgomery should look into it. If New York can do it, maybe we can do it too! No harm in calling Riker’s Island and inquiring about it. Then Sheriff John could be like Sheriff Joe in Arizona with a tent city. Pink uniforms, pink underwear, pink sandals, pink handcuffs, no phone, television, computer, baloney sandwiches three times a day.

Humiliate a little bit and they might not reoffend. And maybe the judge might give more jail time instead of probation.

Just my opinion, but it sure makes senses and is something to look into. And it is cheaper to build up, not out!

(Editor’s Note: The proposal put forth by county officials is not to build a new jail, it is to expand the current facility to provide more bed space)
