Cherokee County authorities on Wednesday charged a Sand Rock man with second-degree assault and aggravated cruelty to animals, according to Sheriff Jeff Shaver.
Deputies responded to a fight at a residence in Sand Rock and discovered the suspect, Colby Brunson, 31, had fled the scene.
Shaver said when Brunson left, he took his wife’s dog with him, saying he was going to kill it. The sheriff said he did shoot the dog.
Investigators located him quickly at a nearby residence and took him into custody.
Shaver said he was arrested in connection with the fight. Another dog was recovered, unharmed, and returned to its owner.
Brunson was taken to the Cherokee County Detention Center, where he awaits bond.
