New priest joins St. Maria Goretti Parish

Father Joshy Mathew this month joined the staff of Elk Grove’s St. Maria Goretti Parish.

He earlier served as a parochial vicar at Elk Grove’s St. Joseph Catholic Church. Mathew later moved to Holy Family Parish in Weed, Calif. He led the effort to rebuild Holy Family after a grass fire destroyed their church building in 2014.

The public is invited to meet Father Mathew at St. Maria Goretti during their weekend masses on Saturdays at 5 p.m. and Sundays at 8 a.m., 10 a.m., and noon. The parish’s office hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays.

Cowboy Church hosting potluck, outdoor festivities

“Cowboy Church” will be held at the Adams Barn in Wilton on Aug. 27.

Cowboy Church is a non-denominational gathering where attendees are invited to enjoy the outdoors, Pastor Larry’s sermons, cowboy poetry, sing-alongs, and a potluck dinner. The event begins at 4 p.m. at 9726 Cosumnes Road. For more information, call (916) 838-7894 or (916) 956-2584.

St. Mary’s to host guest Muslim speaker

St. Mary’s Episcopal Church is hosting a guest Muslim speaker as part of their “Who Is My Neighbor?” series on Aug. 27. Sayed Waheed of the Elk Grove American Muslim Community Center will deliver a presentation on Islam and the experiences of local Muslims. This free event runs 6:30-8 p.m.
