CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — Cole Thompson hit a two-run single in the top of the 10th inning to lead the Kane County Cougars to a 2-0 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Friday. With the victory, the Cougars swept the three-game series.
The single by Thompson scored Yan Sanchez and Stephen Smith.
Cedar Rapids had a runner on second in the bottom of the 10th, but a runner was thrown out on a single to end the game as Cal Becker earned his first save of the season.
Kane County starter Riley Smith went seven scoreless innings, allowing four hits while striking out three and walking two. Junior Garcia (2-0) got the win with 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief while Colton Davis (4-3) took the loss in the Midwest League game.
The Kernels were blanked for the 12th time this season, while the Cougars’ staff recorded their 11th shutout of the year.
