After more than five decades of selling shoes in Belmont Shore, Herman’s Shoe Fashions will shut its doors this month.
The family-owned business, founded by Herman Garcia, has been operating since 1965 on Second Street near Argonne Avenue, but the family has announced they plan to close it sometime in August.
“We just came to the end of an era,” Garcia’s daughter Bernice said, noting high rental costs and other changes in Belmont Shore that contributed to the family’s decision to close, despite their best efforts to keep going.
Since Herman’s passing in 2011 at the age of 88, the shoe store has been overseen by his widow, 89-year-old Ellen Garcia, and other surviving family members who were determined to continue the man’s legacy.
“We both built it together, but this was his dream,” said Ellen, who was by Herman’s side for 67 wedding anniversaries.
Bernice said her mother is devastated about the closure, emphasizing that greeting customers at the shop is part of the woman’s daily routine and something she loves.
“I hope people come in this month and say goodbye to the store and my mom — that would mean so much,” Bernice said. “We are so grateful for all of the support we’ve had through the years. We want to thank the community for 53 years of being so kind to us. Our customers have been our family.”
Before the store closes, everything is on sale.
“Everything that isn’t nailed down is 60% off right now, so it’s a great opportunity for a bargain,” Bernice said.
