Woman dies after boat sinks near Big River | Local News Stories – Arizona News

One person was killed Saturday in a boat accident near Big River. Deputies with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department responded to the accident around 6:30 p.m.

According to deputies, a 19-foot closed-bow boat driven by Umberto Bagnara, 52, of Beaumont, California, lost power and became swamped and started to sink.

Six of the passengers were able to swim away from the boat, but a woman, identified as Tasha Turner, 30, of Hemet, California, became tangled in a ski rope attached to the vessel. She was unable to free herself from the rope and was pulled under the surface as the boat sank.

Divers from the La Paz County Sheriff’s Office found the boat, but because of a strong current and water and lighting conditions, recovery efforts were postponed until Sunday morning.

Divers found the boat and the victim around 7 a.m. on Sunday. The boat had launched at the ramps at Big River Park. No other injuries were reported. The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information may call Deputy William Poe of the Colorado River Station/Marine Enforcement Unit at 760-326-9200.
