Berkeley park sees latest weekend assaults, robberies – California News

BERKELEY — Police are seeking a suspect in the third attempted robbery and assault in the last five weeks at People’s Park.

At 11 a.m. Sunday, UC Berkeley police responded to a report of a battery, kidnapping and robbery at the park, 2556 Haste Street. There, officers spoke with a male victim who said a suspect approached him and punched him several times.

The suspect then dragged him out of the park before stealing his cellphone, eventually running southbound from the park. The victim suffered minor injuries.

Officers searched the area but were not able to find the suspect, described as an African-American man about 25 to 28 years old, 5-foot-8 or 5-foot-9 with a thin mustache or goatee, wearing a tan wide-brim hat, burgundy fleece jacket and blue jeans, and carrying an unknown-colored backpack.

Police are still seeking suspects in previous assaults at the park July 2 and July 30.

Anyone with information should call UC Berkeley police’s criminal investigative bureau at 510-642-0472 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and 510-642-6760 on holidays.
