Preliminary examination testimony is expected to end today in the case of a 35-year-old Holtville man accused of fatally stabbing a 39-year-old Holtville resident on June 29 in Holtville.
All told, seven individuals with knowledge of the fatal incident had testified on Tuesday, with one of them expected to continue to testify today and likely be followed by another witness for the defense.
Much of Tuesday’s testimony centered on defendant Erik Portugal’s alleged gang ties and whether the fatal stabbing he is accused of committing was done on behalf of the interests of a local gang.
Portugal is facing one count of murder as well as making criminal threats in connection to the June 29 incident that resulted in Ernest Joey Garibaldi sustaining fatal stab wounds to his head and arm.
