Preliminary hearing begins in alleged Holtville murder case – California News

Preliminary examination testimony continues today in the case of a 35-year-old Holtville man accused of fatally stabbing a 39-year-old Holtville resident on June 29 in Holtville.

Erik M. Portugal is alleged to have fatally stabbed Ernest Joe Garibaldi during a physical altercation in front of the residence of Garibaldi’s cousin, Manuel Garcia, who testified for the prosecution on Monday.

Garcia’s ongoing testimony is expected to be followed today by those of various law enforcement personnel that either responded to the scene or conducted the subsequent investigation, as well as the suspect’s mother.

The preliminary examination will allow county Superior Court Judge Christopher Plourd to determine whether enough evidence exists to rule Portugal be held for trial for a count of murder.
